CLEVELAND -- Sergio Santos wasnt as wild. He was just as worrisome. Santos retired Michael Brantley on a hard grounder with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to close out Torontos 3-2 win over the Cleveland Indians on Friday night. Melky Cabrera had four hits and scored Torontos go-ahead run in the seventh inning on Edwin Encarnacions single before the Blue Jays withstood a shaky ninth by Santos, who bounced back from an awful outing in Minnesota on Thursday. "It got a little hairy there," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "But the bottom line is he got it done." On Thursday, Santos threw three wild pitches in the eighth, allowing three runs to score, and he and two Blue Jays relievers combined for eight walks in the inning as the Twins rallied to beat Toronto 9-5 and sweep a doubleheader. Clinging to a 3-2 lead against the Indians, Santos gave up a leadoff double to Lonnie Chisenhall and struck out Michael Bourn and Nick Swisher -- on six pitches. Santos then went to 3-2 counts before walking Jason Kipnis and Carlos Santana to load the bases before getting Brantley on a one-hop smash that Encarnacion knocked down before touching the bag. "Trust me, Id love to get a 1-2-3 with fewer pitches," Santos said. "But its a long year and Im trying to learn as much as I can." Santos insisted he didnt carry Thursdays performance to the mound. "I didnt think about that once," he said. "The second we left Minnesota, all that stuff was left there. New day. New stadium. New team. New opportunity. Thats all I was looking for." The Blue Jays trailed 2-1 in the seventh before Munenori Kawasaki hit an RBI single off reliever Marc Rzepczynski (0-1), and Encarnacion delivered against Cody Allen. Steve Delabar (1-0), also involved in the eighth-inning debacle at Minnesota, got the win in relief of starter Drew Hutchison. Following the game, Kawasaki was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo to make room for shortstop Jose Reyes, who has been out since opening day with a strained hamstring. Carlos Santana hit a two-run homer for the Indians, who have dropped six of eight. Cabrera got his first three hits off Indians starter Justin Masterson, improving to 15 for 27 against the right-hander. Down 2-1, the Blue Jays scored twice in the seventh to take the lead and chase Masterson. Ryan Goins walked with one out and manager Terry Francona pulled Masterson, who allowed six hits, struck out nine and remained without a decision in four starts. Cabrera followed with a single off Rzepczynski, and Kawasaki tied it with his single. Allen came on to face Jose Bautista, and catcher Yan Gomes throwing error to first moved up the runners. Bautista was then walked intentionally and Encarnacion hammered his single to centre, putting the Blue Jays ahead 3-2. Gomes and Swisher had put on a play to try to pick off Kawasaki, but the throw skipped into right field. "Its a hard one to swallow," Gomes said. "Probably right there it cost us the game." Santana busted out of a long slump with his homer in the sixth off Hutchison to give the Indians a 2-1 lead. Santana was in a 1-for-30 slide before he connected off Hutchison, who took a shutout into the sixth with nine strikeouts. Santana had been hitless in his previous 11 at-bats. Hutchison cruised into the fifth before the Indians finally got to the right-hander. Jason Kipnis beat out an infield single and Santana drove a 3-2 pitch to right for his first homer since Sept. 28. Toronto pushed across a run in the fourth off Masterson, who had escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third. Colby Rasmus doubled off the wall in centre with one out and moved to third on Mastersons wild pitch. Brett Lawrie followed with a tapper toward third that Santana charged but was unable to grab with his bare hand as Rasmus scored. NOTES: Bautista has reached safely in all 17 games. ... Cabrera has 11 four-hit games. With a chance to get his fifth hit, he grounded out in the ninth. ... In addition to the Reyes move, the Blue Jays placed DH Adam Lind on the DL with a sore back. After Week 15 it looked like fate mapped out its easiest route for the Baltimore Ravens when it came to the jumbled postseason picture for the AFCs final wild-card slot. A less-than impressive 20-12 Week 15 home win over what turned out to be a 3-13 Jacksonville team improved the Ravens to 9-5 with games at Houston and Cleveland on the docket. While both the Texans and Browns had been more than competitive at times this season, each was in disarray at the quarterback position. Houston was down to its fourth signal caller, Case Keenum, after both Ryan Fitzpatrick and rookie Tom Savage were lost to injury against Indianapolis, and Cleveland was ping- ponging back-and-forth between the limited Brian Hoyer and the ill-prepared Johnny Manziel. The Ravens, though, couldnt take advantage against Keenum, who was brought back by the Texans from the St. Louis Rams practice squad only after the injuries to Fitzpatrick and Savage, as Joe Flacco had one of his worst days as a professional in South Texas, completing only 21 of his 50 passes for 195 yards. We got our (butts) kicked, plain and simple, Flacco said after what seemed like a debilitating 25-13 setback. They brought a ton of pressure up the middle and we never got into a groove . The hiccup in Houston meant Baltimore needed a win in the regular-season finale against the Browns and help in the form of a Chargers loss at Kansas City, almost a logical scenario. After all fate continued to smile on the Ravens when Manziel was shut down for the season with a hamstring injury and it became clear that Hoyer wouldnt be able to go in Week 17, making undrafted rookie free agent Connor Shaw the only option for Cleveland at quarterback. Meanwhile, Arrowhead Stadium is one of the toughest places to play in the NFL and the Chiefs had plenty to play for because their postseason hopes were still alive, albeit in a convoluted scenario of a win, coupled with losses by both the Ravens and Texans. A significant hurdle emerged, though, when it was revealed that Kansas City signal caller Alex Smith would be forced to miss the regular-season finale with a lacerated spleen, suffered during the third quarter of Kansas Citys Week 16 loss to Pittsburgh.dddddddddddd The veterans absence meant Chase Daniel was being counted on in what was just his second NFL start. All we can do is worry about ourselves, Flacco said. Daniel, a Mizzou product who spent four years under the learning tree of Drew Brees before arriving in the Midwest, proved to be up to the task in KC. He was hardly spectacular but steered clear from the game-changing mistake and rode a ferocious pass rush to a 19-7 win, eliminating the Chargers. That left everything on the table for Baltimore, which was down a TD to Shaw and Co. with potentially only 15 minutes left in its season. Flacco, who already has plenty of postseason work and a Super Bowl title on his resume, awoke late, tossing both of his touchdown passes in the fourth quarter as the Ravens rallied past the Browns 20-10. Down 10-6, Flacco found Torrey Smith over the top for a 53-yard gain before going right back to the big-play receiver for a 16-yard score with less than eight minutes remaining, a sequence that essentially punched Baltimores postseason ticket. Youre watching (the Chiefs-Chargers game) like, We have a good opportunity here that were wasting right now, Smith said. We got back on track, made a couple big plays and got the momentum back. As the clock expired in Baltimore, time was also ticking down in Kansas City and the fans at M&T Bank Stadium erupted. The Ravens were back in the postseason for the sixth time in seven years under coach John Harbaugh after missing the party in 2013. Just a gutsy effort, Harbaugh said. Faith and guts. Our guys kept faith and fought to the end. That faith and those guts had wed good fortune and dont expect the Ravens to apologize for it. It feels good, man, Flacco said. I remember sitting at home last year a week from now, and it didnt feel very good. That at least wont be happening this year. [url=

Devane made headlines in the pre-season when he broke Buffalo Sabres forward Corey Tropps jaw in a fight. A full line brawl occurred after the next faceoff, when Sabres enforcer John Scott went after Leafs forward Phil Kessel. The Mississauga native appeared in 22 games last season with the Marlies, picking up two goals and three assists, as well as 41 penalty minutes. ST. LOUIS -- Typically, a Sam Bradford rehab update in early June is not a major media event. Blame it on the other Sam on the St. Louis Rams roster. Attention was super-sized Thursday because of rookie defensive end Michael Sam. "I figured thats where you guys would be," Bradford joked after a workout. Sam, the first openly gay player drafted in the NFL, meets with reporters on Friday. The team is hoping the hubbub will die down eventually and Sam will be treated like any other seventh-round pick. "I think the media doesnt give athletes enough credit for just accepting players as they are," said wide receiver T.J. Moe, who was Sams teammate at Missouri. "They just assume its a tough-guy culture, and How are they possibly going to handle it? I think maybe its the other way around. How are the media handling it?" Bradford, the first overall pick in 2010, is more than five months removed from left knee surgery and said everything is on schedule. The quarterback got a scheduled day off to allow for bounce-back time and is expected to practice Friday. "To be honest, throughout the process Ive felt really good and felt better than what Id anticipated," Bradford said. "Even when youre healthy you have good days with your arm and bad days with your arm, and now its kind of the same thing with my knee." During the rehab, Bradford has added upper-body strength and believes he has a "little more pop" on his throws. "Moving around great," coach Jeff Fisher said. "Yeah, he does everything. Hes doing all the drops and the footwork is really good." Rumours the Rams might draft Johnny Manziel were easy for Bradford to dismiss. He was kept in the loop by Fisher and general manager Les Snead during the off-season. "They made it very clear what their plan was," Bradford said. "They continue to make that clear." Neither Bradford nor Fisher believe the quarterback has anything extra to prove this season. The Rams drafted protection for Bradford, taking Auburn offensive tackle Greg Robinson with the second overall pick, and held onto guard Rodger Saffold. They added veteran wide receiver Kenny Britt to the mix, too, reuniting him with Fisher. Britt made a couple of nice catches and also was involved in a bit of a scuffle Thursday. "Right now Im actually taking this year as a rookie year and building my platform," Britt said. "Everything starts from scratch." Britt had little to say about a sexually explicit video posted to his Instagram account last month. "Thats something that touches home," he said. "Me and my wife have to deal with that. Were going to leave it at that." Notes: Fisher anticipates offensive tackle Jake Long, also rehabbing from knee surgery, will be ready to participate in the middle of training camp and was "on pace" to start the opener. Long was hurt at the end of the season and his operation was in January, about two months after Bradfords procedure. The Habs, the only Canadian team to make this years post-season, saw their Stanley Cup dreams extinguished as the New York Rangers eked out a 1-0 victory in Game 6 of their Eastern Conference final. Although the game was played in New York, the Bell Centre in Montreal was packed once again as the decisive matchup was broadcast on giant screens for a sold-out crowd. Fans emerging from the arena after the game were obviously disappointed but there was no trouble downtown. Helmeted, riot-equipped police stood watch along Ste-Catherine Street but even many of them didnt stay around too long. It was in sharp contrast to the final game of Montreals previous series, against the Boston Bruins, when police lined the street to protect businesses from rowdy fans. On Thursday night, although there was the occasional vocal outburst from unhappy or frustrated fans, Montrealers appeared to accept the defeat as they quietly headed home. Emilie Quilliams, 18, said her disappointment at the playoff exit was tempered by seeing the Canadiens reach the semifinals. "Im still proud of them," she said. "For them to come to the second-to-last round of the playoffs, its something that we havent seen in quite a while, so I was really happy for them.&qquot; Many fans were already looking ahead to next season, particularly after a gritty playoff performance that included goaltender Dustin Tokarski filling in admirably for starter Carey Price, who was injured early in the Rangers series.dddddddddddd Joe Kutlu, 40, heaped praise galore on Tokarski and urged the Canadiens to sign him up. "They bring up a goalie who is a legend right now and hes going to be known and Im guessing a lot of players are really going to admire him for years to come," Kutlu said. Jean-Francois Belisle echoed the sentiments of many fans as he looked at the season with a sense of accomplishment. "Im proud of the Canadiens season, Im not angry," he said. "Obviously, it would have been great to go further but it was a good match, a good series and good playoffs." The Canadiens were a pleasant playoff surprise for their faithful, sweeping the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round and then defeating the Bruins, the leagues top team, in seven in the next round. The Habs were the last Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup when they defeated the Los Angeles Kings in 1993. The Chicago Blackhawks made a move, dealing with former GM Dale Tallon to re-acquire a member of their 2010 Stanley Cup team. Numbers Game looks at the deal sending Kris Versteeg to the Blackhawks for a couple of prospects. The Blackhawks Get: RW Kris Versteeg and LW Philippe Lefebvre. Versteeg, 27, is off to a relatively slow start this season, with two goals, seven points and a minus-9 rating in 18 games, but there are reasons to actually be positive about his play, even as he is coming back from reconstructive knee surgery. First off, Versteeg has relatively strong possession stats, and was horribly unlucky, particularly on the defensive end, where Panthers goaltenders provided an abysmal .871 even-strength save percentage with Versteeg on the ice. In the offensive end, Versteeg has scored on a carer-low 4.3% of his shots. Since he has scored on 11.9% of his shots over the course of his career, its reasonable to expect that rate to go up. Additionally, it could be troubling if Versteegs low point production was a function of not getting opportunities, perhaps indicating that he cant even get into scoring position, but thats not the case. Versteeg has a career-high 2.61 shots on goal per game despite playing a career-low 15:42 per game for the Panthers. Versteeg also hasnt had a great deal of consistency in terms of linemates in Florida. His most common linemates have been C Scott Gomez and LW Jonathan Huberdeau, but has also spent time with rookie C Aleksander Barkov, LW Tomas Fleischmann, LW Scottie Upshall and C Marcel Goc. In Chicago, Versteeg can slide into a third-line role, but has the skill to work on the power play and move up the lineup if need be. Hes a four-time 20-goal scorer who finished the 2011-2012 season with a career-high 54 points. Since leaving Chicago in the summer of 2010, Versteeg has played for Toronto, Philadelphia and Florida. The Panthers will eat half of what remains on Versteegs contract (and cap hit) through the life of the deal, which runs through the 2015-2016 season. Half of his four-year, $17.6-million deal counts as $2.2-million per year against the cap, with a slightly higher cash outlay over the next couple seasons. Lefebvre is an undrafted 22-year-old winger who has split his time between the AHL and ECHL in his first two pro campaigns. He has 18 points in 92 AHL games, so hes a longshot to be anything more than a minor-league contributor. His inclusion in the deal is likely more about giving the Panthers flexibility since they have 48 (of a possible 50) players under contract. The Panthers Get: RW Jimmy Hayes and D Dylan Olsen. Hayes, who turns 24 next week, is a 6-foot-6 winger who hasnt been able to stick as a regular with the Blackhawks, but has 13 points and relatively unimpressive possession numbers in 43 career NHL games, though he has tallied 29 goals and 53 points in 80 AHL games since the start of last season. It could be an interesting fit if the Panthers were to pair Hayes with 6-foot-6 C Nick Bjugstad, a mix of towering collegiate forwards who have some skill to go with their size. Even if Hayes fits lower on the depth chart, he should get a legitimate opportunity to prove that hes capable of handling an NHL job. Olsen, a 22-year-old who was a first-round pick in 2009, played 28 games for the Blackhawks in 2011-2012, finishing with one assist and minus-5 rating. He has 30 points in 152 AHL games since leaving the University of Minnesota-Duluth and needs to play a steadier game if hes going to be anything more than a fringe NHLer. Its understandable that the Panthers, in a rebuilding mode, dont necessarily see the value in a 27-year-old winger who is on the wrong end of percentages early this season, not viewing Versteeg as part of the solution to their current problems. But even if that is the case, its fair to question a process that brings two Tallon draft picks (from his time as Blackhawks GM) as the return, particularly when the Panthers were willing to take on half of the financial obligation due to Versteeg over the next two-and-three-quarter seasons. Maybe Hayes and Olsen are going to make it as NHLers in South Florida, but it appears that what made them most qualified for this trade is that they were familiar commodities to the Panthers general manager. The Ottawa team of Homan, lead Lisa Weagle, second Alison Kreviazuk and third Emma Miskew, defended the Canadian womens curling championship they won last year in Kingston, Ont. At 13-0, they are the first since Linda Moores rink in 1985 to go undefeated at the tournament. Homan took early leads all week and did it again by posting three points in the second end, although Sweeting answered with a hit for two in the third. Sweeting was a tad strong on a raise in the fourth and Homan came around the right side to hit for two. Alberta got one back in the fifth. Canada was in trouble in the sixth when a Sweeting draw left Alberta with three stones near the button, but Homan scattered them with a hit to salvage one point. Sweeting drew for two in the seventh to close the gap to one point, only to see Homan pick off two Sweeting draws to score two in the eighth. A Sweeting bid for a double takeout fell short and the Alberta skip was forced to draw for one in the ninth, handing Homan the hammer and a two-point lead going into the final end. Canada ran them out of rocks to clinch the victory. Prime Minister Stephen Harper witnessed the win from the grandstands at the Maurice Richard Arena. Second Sherri Singler threw a flash, third Sherry Anderson hit a guard and soon there were five Manitoba stones ringing the button. Lawton tried to sneak in an angled raise with her last shot, but it couldnt get through and Carey got a steal of three. "It was worth a try,"said Lawton. WEST BROMWICH, England -- Striker Nicolas Anelka announced he has terminated his contract with Premier League club West Bromwich Albion with immediate effect on Friday after being suspended for five matches by the Football Association for a racially aggravated goal celebration. The former France forward, whose career has been marred by controversies, was suspended last month for performing a gesture which is known in France as a "quenelle" and regarded as anti-Semitic. Anelka said on his Twitter account on Friday that he decided to leave the club because he could not accept West Broms conditions for being allowed back into the squad. "Proposals have been made for me to rejoin the group under certain conditions that I cant accept," Anelka said in French on his 35th birthday. "Wishing to keep my integrity, I took the decision to free myself and end the contract linking me with West Bromwich Albion until 2014, with immediate effect." In January, Anelka hinted that he could end his career at the end of the season but also mentioned interests from clubs including Lazio in signing him. Anelka performed the quenelle as he celebrated scoring in West Broms 3-3 draw with West Ham last December. The gesture involves pointing one straightened arm downward while touching the shoulder with the opposite hand. It was popularized by French comedian Dieudonne MBala MBala, who has been convicted for inciting racial hatred and anti-Semitism. After his suspension was announced at the end of last month, both Anelka and West Brom decided not to appeal the sanction. In Anelkas witness statement, the striker said he became aware of Dieudonne in about 2000, met him once, and watched recordings of his shows. He said he made the gesture "purely to say hello to my friend." Anelka, who had previously been photographed performing the salute, joined West Brom last summer after two disappointing seasons at Shanghai Shenhua and Juventus. The former Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Bolton and Chelsea player is one of the most talented and controversial players France has produced since former Manchester United great Eric Cantona. After growing up in a Parisian suburb, Anelka started his career at Paris Saint-Germain and was quickly spotted by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who signed him in 1997. Known for his immense technical skills, Anelka played a big part in the Gunners winning both the Premier League and the FA Cup but missed out on a place in the France team that won the 1998 World Cup. Anelkas sometimes nonchalant attitude and apparent lack of commitment to the team started to anger the Arsenal fans, who gave him the nickname "Le Sulk." Anelka then joined Real Madrid, where he won the Champions League, before moving to PSG, Liverpool, Manchester City, Fenerbahce and Bolton. The much-travelled Frenchman then struck up an electric partnership with Didier Drogba at Chelsea, winning the Premier League title and two FA Cups with the Blues. Anelka caused the biggest controversy of his career with the French national team, when he was sent home from the 2010 World Cup after insulting then-coach Raymond Domenech in the dressing room. The stubborn Anelka refused to apologize and ended his international career in the wake of the scandal with 14 goals in 69 appearances. MILAN, Italy -- Juventus took a giant step towards a third straight Serie A title after beating Fiorentina 1-0 on Sunday to extend its lead at the top of the standings to 14 points with second-placed Roma losing 1-0 at Napoli. Roma has a game in hand but now second place is even at risk for the capital side as Napoli moved to within three points with the win. "The result is not always fair," Roma coach Rudi Garcia said. "If we play like this until the end we will win many matches. Weve lost a bit of efficiency in front of goal and also a bit of luck. We need to be more clinical again. "The gap is already too much for the title. We have to go forwards and remain focused for second spot." In Turin, Kwadwo Asamoah scored a brilliant goal three minutes from halftime to give Juventus the lead. "The wins against Milan and today have put pressure on those behind us," Juventus coach Antonio Conte said. "I feel were 50% champions, there are still 11 matches left. We shouldnt give up, like that those behind us will convince themselves they cant do it," added Conte. Unlike the first match this season where Juventus squandered a two-goal lead against Fiorentina to lose 4-2 -- its only league defeat this campaign -- the Bianconeri held on to record its 14th home league victory. It has a perfect record at the Juventus Stadium this season. Inter Milan is only a point behind fourth-placed Fiorentina after beating Torino 1-0. Parma, which has a game in hand, is a point further back following its 2-0 victory over Hellas Verona. Lazio lost 1-0 at home to Atalanta in a match which saw Antonio Candreva sent off for two bookings. At the other end of the table, Livorno wasted a two-goal lead to lose a relegation battle 4-2 at Sampdoria. Elsewhere, Chievo Verona secured a 2-1 win over Genoa, while Bologna and Sassuolo played out a goalless draw. It was the first of three matches in less than two weeks between Juventus and Fiorentina as they meet in the Europa League. "I think we had a great second half. We have to pick up from there," Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella said. "On Thursday we have the chance to have our say and show what we can do." Juventus broke the deadlock when Asamoaah cut in from the left and carved out space between four Fiorentina defenders before unleashing a stunning effort which took a slight deflection before going in off the inside of the far post.dddddddddddd Fiorentina was improving and went closest 11 minutes from time when substitute Ryder Matos headed off the crossbar shortly after coming off the bench. Napoli had beaten Roma 3-0 the last time the two sides met at the Sao Paolo, in the Italian Cup semifinal. Jose Maria Callejon scored in that match and he did so again eight minutes from time, heading Faouzi Ghoulams cross in off the underside of the crossbar as Roma fell to only its second league defeat of the season. "This was a very important match for us," Callejon said. "We all gave 110% and at the end we won. We showed our character. "Now Napolis aim is second spot." Roma will also be waiting on news of Kevin Strootman as the midfielder was stretchered off in obvious agony after landing heavily on his left knee in the 12th minute. It is feared the Dutch international has suffered ligament damage. Inter is sneaking up on Fiorentina after stretching its unbeaten run to five. Inter took a deserved lead in bizarre circumstances as Rodrigo Palacio appeared to be trying to nod Esteban Cambiassos cross back across the face of goal but it went in at the far post. Parma and Verona were level on points at the start of the match and knew the victor would boost its hopes of qualifying for the Europa League. Jonathan Biabiany got a decisive touch to deflect Massimo Gobbis snap shot into the net off the inside of the right post in the 20th. Parma sealed the result in stoppage time as Antonio Cassano stole the ball off Verona goalkeeper Rafael and, although his curling shot crashed off the post, Ezequiel Schelotto was on hand to follow up. Livorno appeared to be heading for all three points after a double from Ibrahima Mbaye had given it a two-goal lead. However, Sampdoria was level eight minutes after the break thanks to a strike from substitute Nenad Krsticic and an own goal from Federico Ceccherini. Stefano Okaka and Manolo Gabbiadini sealed the result. Livorno remained in the relegation zone, two points behind Bologna and three

NEW YORK -- It looked like Ohio States winning streak to start the season was over. The third-ranked Buckeyes were down eight points to Notre Dame with less than 2 minutes to play and their offence was nowhere to be found. They still had their tough defence and somehow they were able to turn the game completely around and beat the Fighting Irish 64-61 on Saturday night in the BlackRock Gotham Classic at Madison Square Garden. "I dont really know what happened. It was a big blur," Ohio State senior guard Aaron Craft said. "We never stopped. We never gave up. Guys were running around getting tips and guys made big free throws." While a few players did come up with big defensive plays, it was mostly one guy who made the free throws for the Buckeyes (12-0). Lenzelle Smith Jr. scored seven of his nine points in the final 33 seconds -- including going 5 of 5 at the line -- to lead the rally. "Im still trying to figure out what happened," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. "My mind was fixated on if we wanted to foul with the time situation or do we play it out defensively and all of a sudden it was closer and closer and closer and we get the lead. It happened quick, It was a great win." The Buckeyes went 9:10 without a field goal and at one point were 6 of 21 from the field as Notre Dame (8-4) opened what seemed to be a comfortable lead late. Jerian Grant hit a 3-pointer as the shot clock was expiring to give the Fighting Irish a 58-50 advantage with 1:54 to play. "I am so thoroughly disappointed," Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said. "We had such a good chance at such a great win." The Buckeyes turned up the defensive intensity and they converted consecutive steals into a 58-56 deficit with 40 seconds to go. Demetrius Jackson made two free throws for Notre Dame a second later. Smith was fouled taking a 3-pointer and he made all three free throws to bring Ohio State within 60-59 with 32 seconds left. Steve Vasturia, who was in the game because point guard Eric Atkins had fouled out, missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 31 seconds left, his first free throw attempt of the season. Smith scored down low on a nice pass by Craft to give the Buckeyes a 61-60 lead with 16 seconds to go. After a Notre Dame turnover, Smith made two free throws for a 63-60 lead with 9.8 seconds left. Grant made one free throw with 6.7 seconds left and Craft made one free throw with 3.3 seconds left. Jackson missed a potential tying 3 as the buzzer sounded. "They really turned the heat up on us and flustered us. We had a hard time doing anything right," Brey said. "We didnt have Atkins but the other guys should have handled it better." LaQuinton Ross had 16 points and 11 rebounds for Ohio State while Amir Williams had 13 points and Shannon Scott and Craft both added 10. Grant had 18 points for Notre Dame, which committed five of its 13 turnovers in the final 2 minutes, while Garrick Sherman had 14 and Pat Connaughton 13. "Im a senior and I have to find a way to not turn the ball over when we didnt have our point guard in there," Grant said. The Buckeyes shot 34.5 per cent in the second half (10 of 29, including missing all nine 3-point attempts). They went 9:10 without a field goal in the second half, and thats when Notre Dame opened a 52-44 lead with 5:33 to play. Williams dunked on the next possession to end Ohio States long drought. "They packed that zone in and I dont think we were trusting the system as much as we needed to," Craft said. "We took some bad shots and didnt attack. We were letting the missing offensively affect us defensively and let that get tied together and thats not what good teams do." Notre Dame opened the second half on a 9-2 run that tied the game at 35. The run was started by a 3-pointer by Atkins, the Fighting Irishs first in seven attempts from beyond the arc. "Its nice to see all the players coming back in the locker room, and Im like, Ill see you later," she said. Sharapova started early but didnt start well. She won only five points in the first four games before settling down to reach the quarterfinals at the Sony Open by beating Kirsten Flipkens 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. The worlds top-ranked players had an easier time. Serena Williams eliminated fellow American CoCo Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-1. Rafael Nadal received a warning for slow play and still won in 59 minutes against Denis Istomin, 6-1, 6-0. Venus Williams lost her serve eight times and was beaten by No. 10 Dominika Cibulkova 6-1, 5-7, 6-3. Sharapova, meanwhile, endured her second successive ragged three-setter and found herself trailing 4-0 after only 15 minutes. "I usually like playing the first match, but I didnt start off the way I wanted to," she said. "Nothing was working." Seeded No. 4, Sharapova seemed thrown off by the lack of pace from Flipkens, a tour veteran who hits floating backhands and sometimes slices her forehand as well. "Shes a different type of opponent," Sharapova said. "There are not too many girls that hit a slice backhand 90 per cent of the time in the rallies. But I know what to expect from her game. It shouldnt be that much of a surprise." Sharapova finished with 36 unforced errors and only 13 winners. She also double-faulted 10 times. But she won — and was ready to leave Crandon Park before most matches had even begun. With the rest of the day free, what was on the schedule for one of the worlds most celebrated athletes? "Not much, actually," Sharapova said. "I like to have my afternoon tea around 5. Its like a Russian tradition. Ill see my dog, spend some time with him, then get treaatment, dinner, and then the day is over.dddddddddddd" At the top of her to-do list for the rest of the week is winning her first Key Biscayne title. Sharapova has been the runner-up five times, including each of the past three years, but she downplays any frustration regarding her many near-misses. "Of course you want to be able to hold the winners trophy," she said. "But you also remember the matches that you got through to get in the position to get to the final stage. Its not like I didnt have my opportunities in those finals; I just didnt take them. Thats why you come back and hope for another chance." Williams seems to be gaining momentum as the tournament unfolds, as usual. She overcame sloppy patches in her first two matches and committed only one unforced error in the second set against Vandeweghe. But Williams was impressed with the 22-year-old American, and told her so when they met at the net after the match. "She said, Listen, you played so well. Weve got to play doubles. Wed do so well," Vandeweghe said. Williams next plays No. 5-seeded Angelique Kerber, who beat Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. No. 8 Petra Kvitova rallied past No. 12 Ana Ivanovic, who double-faulted nine times in the final two sets and lost 3-6, 6-0, 6-0. In mens third-round play, No. 10 seed John Isner, the only American to reach the mens third round, hit 17 aces and beat Nicolas Almagro 7-5, 6-3. No. 22-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov rallied from a break down in the final set to beat Dusan Lajovic 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (5). Dolgopolov has gone 6-1 this month despite his worries about unrest in his native Ukraine, where his mother and other relatives still live. "For me it was important it has calmed down and no people are dying," said Dolgopolourl] ' ' '

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Kemba Walker knew he was going to take the final shot, no matter what. So did his teammates.Thats just the way the Hornets fourth-year point guard likes it.As soon as we get in those situations, theyre like, Kemba, win the game, Walker said. When you have a bunch of guys that have that much confidence in you, of course you want to take that shot.Walker scored 31 points, including an awkward-looking 11-foot jumper from near the right baseline that somehow found its way in off the glass with 1.4 seconds left to lift Charlotte to a 98-94 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night. It was Walkers third game-winner of the season as the Hornets (13-24) overcame a 13-point third-quarter deficit to win their third straight. With the game tied, Walker drove deep to the right side of the lane close to the baseline, ducked his body and appeared to struggle getting the shot off as Jrue Holiday hit his arm. Walker muscled the ball up as the whistle blew, and it banked in. He added the free throw for the 3-point play. The Pelicans had one last chance to tie, but Marvin Williams stole the inbounds pass at half court and was fouled. He sank one of two shots to seal the victory.I dont know how that ball went it, Walker said with a laugh. It was so awkward because the angle was super awkward. I just got it up and was fortunate it went in. Its always a great feeling to make shots like that.Said Holiday: He drove the lane and I defended as best I could. He just made the shot. The Hornets have counted on Walker to take on an additional scoring load with Al Jefferson and Lance Stephenson out with injuries. Hes stepped up to the challenge with three straight 30-point games.Without many scoring options on the court, Walker took nearly every shot down the stretch and finished with 17 points in the second half. He missed two layups in the final two minutes, but wouldnt be deterred from taking the final shot.He finished 12 of 24 from the field and had four assists and four rebounds. The difference now is that hes shooting the ball better, Hornets coach Steve Clifford said. Hes really played at a very high level all year. Earlier in the year, he didnt shot the ball as well but he spent so much time working on it in the summer that I was confidence he would get it going.Gerald Henderson had 16 points for Charlotte and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist added 13 points and 12 rebounds.Anthony Davis had 32 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks to lead the Pelicans, who fell below .500 for the first time since Dec. 14. Holiday had 16 points and nine assists. We battled, Davis said. Kemba was just Kemba. He hit some big shots down the stretch and won the game for them. The Pelicans built a double-digit lead in the third quarter before Henderson went on a tear, scoring eight of Charlottes next 10 points to pull the Hornets within three. We fell apart, Pelicans coach Monty Williams said. We didnt share the ball, which is what we have been talking about, especially down the stretch of games. The Hornets took the lead with nine minutes left on a pair of free throws by Roberts and would extend their lead to 90-82 when Walker hit two free throws with 4:12 left. But the advantage would quickly evaporate as New Orleans went on a 10-0 run behind Davis.___TIP-INSPelicans: Davis recorded his sixth double-double in the past seven games. ... The Pelicans fell to 6-13 on the road this season.Hornets: Kidd-Gilchrist has recorded a double-double in three of his last four games for the Hornets.WALKER JOINS CLUBWalker became the ninth player in Charlotte history to score 30 points in three straight games. CHICAGO -- Conor Gillaspie leads the Chicago White Sox with a .311 batting average, and on Sunday the third baseman led them to a win with a rare burst of power. Gillaspie hit his first grand slam and Jordan Danks added a two-run shot to cap a six-run first inning, and the White Sox held on to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-5. Gillaspie connected for just his fifth homer and Danks hit his second off Torontos Drew Hutchison (8-11), who lost for the fifth time in seven decisions. Danks nailed a 2-2 pitch off the 23-year-old Blue Jays right-hander, who pitched seven innings and limited the White Sox to one run after the first. "It was just through the hands with two strikes and put it in play hard," Gillaspie said. "You know sometimes you get them up in the air, sometimes you miss them. "It was definitely a good jump-start to the game." Manager Robin Ventura wasnt surprised by Gillaspie deep drive to right-centre field. "Its not like you wouldnt expect him to hit home runs, but hes just a line drive hitter," Ventura said. "When he hits it good, its going to go." Chicago right-hander Scott Carroll (5-7) went 5 2-3 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks. Torontos Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run homer, his 27th this season and first since returning from the disabled list on Friday. The Blue Jays have lost five of six and 11 of 15 to fall 7 1/2 games behind Baltimore in the AL East and four behind Seattle in the AL wild card race. Hutchison has given up six runs or more in four of his last seven starts. "I had two outs, and I had two strikes," Hutchison said of the Gillaspies at-bat. "I had a good chance to get through the inning with no runs and I gave up six, and put us in a big hole." Danks added a third RBI on a sac fly in the sixth. Jake Petricka earned his ninth save in 12 chances after loading the bases in the ninth. "It wasnt like we didnt have any shots," Toronto manager John Gibbons said.dddddddddddd. "We just couldnt get that big hit." Encarnacion golfed his homer just into the left field bullpen in the fifth as Toronto cut it to 6-4. Pinch-hitter Dioner Navarro singled in a run in the sixth to make it 6-5. TRAINERS ROOM Toronto: RHP Kyle Drabek, 7-7 with a 4.00 ERA in Triple-A Buffalo, rejoined the Blue Jays bullpen on Sunday. Veteran 1B Dan Johnson began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday, going 0 for 3 with an RBI. Hes played 13 games with the Blues Jays this season and was put on the DL with a strained left hamstring. TORONTO -- If the league-leading Indiana Pacers provided the perfect gauge for just how much the Toronto Raptors have improved, the answer was: plenty. DeMar DeRozan poured in 26 points to lead the red-hot Raptors to a resounding 95-82 win over Indiana on Wednesday, handing the Pacers just their sixth loss of the season. "We work extremely hard every day so that we understand that if we go out there and play with the same intensity that we do in practice, when were going at each other, we can beat anybody," DeRozan said. "Thats the mindset that we go in with when we play these opponents." The Raptors victory was their fourth in a row, eighth in their last 10 outings, and ninth in 12 games since the trade that sent Rudy Gay to the Sacramento Kings. Toronto also snapped Indianas five-game winning streak. Terrence Ross added 18 points for Toronto (15-15), while Kyle Lowry had a season-high 14 assists to go with 13 points, and Jonas Valanciunas scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds. "Everybody is playing for each other, nobody has any secret agendas, everybody wants the same goal," Ross said. "Were all on the same page, and thats something were getting better at." Raptors coach Dwane Casey had talked before the game about the chance for his players to test themselves against the best in the league, to see how much theyd improved and how far they still had to go. "We did a good job, the guys battled," Casey said afterward. "We came in hungry and fought for 48 minutes, stayed with the game plan and executed." Roy Hibbert scored 16 for the Pacers (25-6) before fouling out with 3:25 to go, while Paul George added 12 and Danny Granger finished with 11. The Raptors confidence was soaring going into Wednesdays game, and just a night earlier they were down by five heading into the fourth quarter at Chicago before rallying for an 85-79 victory over the Bulls. Theyd shown more fight in the past couple of weeks than in recent memory, and were making a habit of fourth-quarter comebacks. But they didnt need one Wednesday. The Raptors led by as much as nine points against a Pacers team that came into the game with a 9-0 record against Atlantic Division opponents, and fought back from a Pacers rally to lead 66-63 going into the fourth quarter. They found another gear down the stretch. Back-to-back buckets by DeRozan then a steal by Ross that turned into a Lowry basket with 2:54 to play had the crowd on its feet screaming and put Toronto up by 11. Afterward, Pacers guard George Hill said the Raptors "beat us at our own game." "They played better than us tonight," Hill said. "Normally we come out and have a tremendous third and fourth quarter but tonight they hit first." The thrilled Air Canada Centre crowd of 18,271 stood and cheered the Raptors off the floor after the final buzzer. The Raptors won with crisp ball movement, doling out 27 assists on 34 made field goals, against one of the best defensive teams in the league. They were also solid on defence. "It says a lot," DeRozan said on his teams defensive effort. "Were going to go out there and battle with the best of them night in and night out. We dont care who you throw out there in front of us, were understand theyre going to throw a punch, and were going to throw punches back." Lowry led the way in defensive play -- the point guard who tops the team in taking charges took one on Hibberts sixth foul. "You just sacrifice yourself for the benefit of the team. Thats what were all doing out here, sacrificing themselves and their game to be a better team," Lowry said. The players praised the noisy crowd that was on its feet for the final few minutes. "Honestly, it was probably the best crowd Ive seen since opening night of last year," Lowry said. "Thats what we need in this building. We want our fans to have a reason to cheer, and I think were giving them a reason to cheer." The Raptors opened with one of the best all-around quarters of the season, with 10 assists on 11 made field goals. They fell behind by six early but outscored the Pacers 24-8 to the end of the quarter to lead 26-18 heading into the second. A three-pointer by Raptors newcomer Greivis Vasquez gave Toronto a nine-point lead early in the second, but the Pacers parlayed 10 Raptors turnovers into nine points, and Indiana took a 44-40 lead into the dressing room at the break. The Pacers were the ones turning the ball over in the third, with the Raptors scoring 14 points on seven Indiana giveaways. Tyler Hansbrough tied the game with a dunk with 1:08 left in the quarter, then John Salmons drained a three to send the Raptors into the fourth up by three points. NOTES: The Raptors are in Washington on Friday to open a three-game road trip against three tough Eastern Conference teams. Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Toronto Argonauts Huge preparation advantage with Toronto. Coming off the bye week, their last game was on August 1, a 31-5 win in Montreal. They had 11 days to get ready for this one. For Winnipeg, its the exact opposite. They played this past Thursday and now play again on Tuesday. Basically they have four days to get ready for the "oddball" Tuesday night game. Drew Willy threw three interceptions and fumbled once for points against Saskatchewan. He will accept, learn and rebound. But coming off such a short week, will all the other players on offence and defence do the same? If Toronto is ever going to take advantage of circumstances, this is the game. Argos over the Bombers in Toronto. Edmonton Eskimos at Ottawa Redblacks The Eskimos are staying in the East to get ready and it should mean very little as they are just a more individually talented team. It is the top defence against the ninth-best offence and even though back home the Redblacks should play a better game, a 27-11 duplication of the first meeting on July 11 is a genuine possibility. One team is processing, learning, evaluating and figuring out what they have and how to use it. The other is in position to have a great year and everything that goes with it. Edmonton over Ottawa. Calgary at Hamilton In Week 2 Hamilton lost to Edmonton by four points in a game they could have won. In Week 4 Hamilton lost in Calgary by three in a game they could have won. In Week 6 Hamilton lost to Winnipeg by one in a game they could have won. And, last week Hamilton lost in BC in again a game they could have won. When does it end, this run of "could have won"? This could be a little bit of a trap game for the Stampeders. They beat Ottawa last week and are now going east for two games, at Hamilton then in Ottawa again, before a truly critical home-and-away against Edmonton. Dan LeFevour was a short yardage quarterback, then a running quarterback, but against BC he had moments where he looked like a complete quarterback. Am I calling trap game for Calgary with Hamilton getting win number two? Yes I am. Hamilton over Calgary by three. Montreal at Saskatchewan Back home again and it may makee a difference for the Riders in a positive way.dddddddddddd On the road again and it may make a difference for the Alouettes in a negative way. Which running back George Cortez starts will be interesting to see. If they go with Jerome Messam it allows for ratio manipulation somewhere else and where exactly will also be interesting to see. Troy Smith was a 44 per cent completion quarterback at home against a good Eskimo defence. He will probably have another 44 completion performance against another good defence in Saskatchewan on the road. That is not enough. In watching video, Montreal will play better run-defence than the 191 they allowed against Edmonton. But you know Saskatchewan will test the defensive front seven of Montreal anyway. Ill take the Riders over the Alouettes. Following the Toronto Argonauts victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the pick for the Argos second Week 8 game, against the BC Lions, has been added. BC Lions at Toronto Argonauts The Winnipeg Blue Bombers faced it in their last game and it will happen to the Toronto Argonauts this week, which is being forced to prepare for an important game on a very short week. Wednesday will be used to recover, review and install. The players will take time to get back in the weight room or run a bit to recover from the previous game. They will then meet with coaches to review the game in an effort to learn and continue the never ending desire to improve. Following that, they will have another meeting to install the game plan they will use against the BC Lions, which may be remarkably different depending on the assessment of the Blue Bombers game. Thursday is much more mental than physical as youre still in recovery mode from Tuesday. Friday is the only day of good practice because by then you should have bounced back physically and overall be feeling better. Vitor Belfort is heading back to the octagon after receiving a conditional licence to fight from the Nevada State Athletic Commission in Las Vegas. He is not permitted to fight anywhere before December and can be subjected to random tests at any time and at his own expense. The Big Man finished 3-1 in Week 7, and sits at 14-14 on the season in Schultz vs. The World. Now Schultz is ready for more action, including an upset prediction in the Hamilton-Calgary game. Saturday is the day before and the anticipation of Game #8 is pretty much all youre thinking about. Then Sunday comes and it seems like the week is an entire blur. For the Lions, things are the complete opposite. They played on Friday the previous week and this contest kicks off Sunday this week, plus they have a new "Bomber Video" to study while the Argos only have the old "Ticats video" of the Lions most recent opponent. NEW YORK -- Acknowledging he "didnt get it right" with a two-game suspension for Ravens running back Ray Rice, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced tougher penalties for players accused of domestic violence, including six weeks for a first offence and at least a year for a second. In a letter and memo sent to all 32 teams owners Thursday, and obtained by The Associated Press, Goodell never mentions Rice by name but makes clear references to the Baltimore player who allegedly hit the woman who is now his wife. Goodell told teams to distribute his memo to all players on their rosters and to post it in locker rooms. It reads in part: "Domestic violence and sexual assault are wrong. They are illegal. They are never acceptable and have no place in the NFL under any circumstances." The memo says that violations of the leagues personal conduct policy "regarding assault, battery, domestic violence and sexual assault that involve physical force will be subject to enhanced discipline." The NFL Players Association said it had been informed of the increased punishments. "As we do in all disciplinary matters, if we believe that players due process rights are infringed upon during the course of discipline, we will assert and defend our members rights," the union statement said. The personal conduct policy is not subject to collective bargaining with the players union, and the commissioner has leeway to impose punishments for such off-field violations. An initial domestic violence offence will draw a six-week ban without pay, although the memo says "more severe discipline will be imposed if there are aggravating circumstances such as the presence or use of a weapon, choking, repeated striking, or when the act is committed against a pregnant woman or in the presence of a child." A second offence will result in banishment from the league, but a player will be allowed to petition for reinstatement after a year. "There is no assurance that the petition will be granted," the memo says. The punishment for Rice drew plenty of attention, including from Congress. Numerous groups that advocate for women and families criticized the penalty as too lenient. Rices suspension begins Saturday, about six months after grainy video showed him dragging his then-fiancee off a casino elevator. Rice has never said exactly what happened in the elevator; he has said his actions were "totally inexcusable." "My disciplinary decision led the public to question our sincerity, our commitment, and whether we understood the toll that domestic violence inflicts on so many families. I take responsibility both for the decision and for ensuring that our actions in the future properly reflect our values," Goodell wrote. "I didnt get it right. Simply put, we have to do better. And we will." Goodells letter notes other steps the league will take to "strengthen our policies on domestic violence and sexual assault," including efforts to educate all NFL employees on the subject. This was a runaway for the highest-ranked American after six runner-up finishes in her previous 16 tournaments. Lewis shot a 7-under 64 on Sunday in the North Texas LPGA Shootout, finishing at 16-under 268 and six strokes ahead of Meena Lee. It was the LPGA Tours largest margin of victory since Jiyai Shin won the 2012 Womens British Open by nine. "Ive been wanting to do this for a long time. I kind of have these mini goals in the back of my mind," Lewis said. "One of them was kind of taking a tournament and running away with it. ... So to be so close the last few weeks and then to come out and shoot 64, I mean I dont even know what to say." It was the ninth career LPGA Tour victory for Lewis, her first since August in the Womens British Open, and will boost the Texan from third to second in the world ranking. Lewis made a putt from about 25 feet off the fringe at the 540-yard seventh for an eagle. She followed with consecutive birdies to make the turn at 14 under and up by three strokes. "The eagle just really kind of got things going in the right direction, and then just I never let up," said Lewis, who punctuated her round with birdies on Nos. 17 and 18. "I never let the hammer down." Lee, the South Korean who won the last her two LPGA Tour titles in 2006, shot 70 after going into the final round at Las Colinas Country Club tied with Lewis for the lead. Lee bogeyed the opening hole and needed a birdie at No. 18 to finish alone in second place. Michelle Wie, who closed within two before faltering late, had a 67 to finish third at 9 under. Na Yeon Choi (69) and Kim Kauffman (70) tied for fourth at 8 under. Kraft Nabisco winner Lexi Thompson (69), Cristie Kerr (71) and Suzann Pettersen (72) were among six players at 7 under. Lewis, from The Woodlands near Houston, has finished outside the top six only once in nine tournaments this year. She was third at the Kraft Nabisco and had another runner-up finish just last week in San Francisco. She had three runner-up finishes in her last eight tournaments in 2013 after her victorry at St.dddddddddddd Andrews. Lewis got a share of the lead in Texas after a frustrating 69 in the third round Saturday when she hit all 18 greens in regulation but missed several makeable birdie putts. "Honestly, I didnt change anything. I didnt do anything different," she said. "They just didnt go in (Saturday). ... But once you see putts in, its kind of contagious." Defending champion Inbee Park closed with a 72 to tie for 14th at finish at 5 under. That will be good enough when the new world ranking comes out to stay No. 1 for the 56th consecutive week since the South Korean replaced Lewis at the top. Lewis will supplant Lydia Ko in the second spot. Ko, who didnt play in North Texas, moved to No. 2 after her win last week in San Francisco only days after her 17th birthday. Wie had her fourth consecutive top-10 finish, including her first win in nearly four wins at home in Hawaii after a runner-up finish in the seasons first major. Wie, playing five groups ahead of Lewis, was 6 under in a span of seven holes -- Nos. 9-15. When she made a 4-foot birdie putt at No. 15, she was 11 under and only two strokes behind Lewis, who was finishing her only bogey of the day at the par-3 11th. Lewis tee shot at the 175-yard 11th half-buried in the sand just under the lip of the bunker. Lewis had sand in her face after hitting out, and couldnt save par. But she got that lost stroke right back with a long birdie putt at the par-4 12th. While Wie was finishing with consecutive bogeys, Lewis had an incredible par-saver at the 390-yard 15th hole, where deciding against an iron she hit her drive into the water. After dropping from about 140 yards, she hit her approach to about 3 feet. Wies eagle at the 510-yard 10th hole was her third of the week there. But after missing the green at the 180-yard 17th for a bogey, she hooked her 8-iron approach at the closing par 5 into the trees and bogeyed. "I thought I had it on 17, just nuked it over the green," Wie said. "I just hit a wall on the last hole, which is disappointing for me. At the same time, 4-under par on the last day, Ill take it

CHICAGO -- Oswaldo Arcias first hit of the season helped give the Minnesota Twins their first win. Chris Colabello had a career-high six RBIs and doubled twice, Arcia hit a go-ahead triple in the ninth inning and the Twins avoided a season-opening sweep with a 10-9 comeback win Thursday over the Chicago White Sox. Manager Ron Gardenhire got his 999th career victory, and Glen Perkins picked up his first save after squandering the lead Wednesday. "Obviously, every day were just going out and trying to compete," Arcia said through a translator. "We competed the whole series and looking forward to carrying this one over." On Thursday, it was the White Sox who couldnt finish. Trailing 9-8 heading into the ninth after Marcus Semien homered in the bottom of the eighth off Caleb Thielbar (1-0), the Twins scored twice off Chicago closer Matt Lindstrom (0-1), who blew his first save chance in two opportunities. Trevor Plouffe singled with two outs in the ninth to tie the game before Arcias triple off the wall in centre gave Minnesota a 10-9 lead. Arcia had been 0 for 13, but his empty start ended at the best time for Minnesota. Colabellos three-run double in the third gave Minnesota a 3-1 edge, and his fifth-inning double off Jose Quintana gave the Twins a 5-1 lead. He also had an RBI groundout in the seventh to complete a career game when the raw conditions (37 degrees at game time) were challenging. "Obviously, I had to have guys on base in front of me," Colabello said. "Just tried to have good at-bats." What Colabello and Arcia did helped the Twins win in starter Phil Hughes debut. Signed by the Twins to a three-year, $24 million contract after seven years with the Yankees, he lasted five innings in his debut and allowed four runs, seven hits and two home runs while striking out seven. Over his last two seasons with the Yankees, Hughes gave up 59 home runs. The two he allowed Thursday were to Alejandro De Aza and Adam Dunn, but he left with a 5-4 lead. Jose Abreu, signed to a six-year, $68 million contract, helped erase that lead. He went 2 for 4 with a double and triple and four RBIs. His fifth-inning double cut the Twins lead to 5-2, and then his bases-loaded triple against Anthony Swarzak gave the White Sox an 8-5 edge in the sixth. De Azas home run was his third of the season and Dunns tied Dave Kingman for 38th all-time with 442, while Tyler Flowers had a career-high four hits. That put Quintana in position for his first win of the year after he went six innings and allowed five runs -- two earned. "He pitched fine," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "I think he had a couple innings there where it got away on him but other than that, he gave us what we needed." He got that no-decision when Josmil Pinto homered in the eighth off Ronald Belisario, and the White Sox lost in the ninth when Lindstrom allowed two runs. "We put up some runs on the board," Lindstrom said. "We came back when we were down, guys putting together great at-bats, playing good defence, so it feels bad kind of letting the team down in that sense." Eric Sogard drove in two runs and threw out a runner at the plate, Scott Kazmir pitched another gem and the Oakland Athletics stayed focused after a delay caused by a malfunction with the outfield lights to beat the New York Yankees 5-1 on Saturday night. "Thats the Coliseum for ya," Sogard said. "Thats why we love this place. Never know what youre gonna get." The game was stopped for 38 minutes in the middle of the fourth inning because of an outage to the panel of lights above left field. Players from both sides said that the lights never initially turned on. The As said the circuit breaker turned off and had to be manually reset. "Maybe some carry over from Friday the 13th the night before. I dont know," As manager Bob Melvin said. New Yorks four-game winning streak ended because of its own errors. Two passed balls by backup catcher John Ryan Murphy, who was inserted in the lineup after Mark Teixeira was scratched with what he called a spasm in his midback, helped Oakland score twice in the fifth. But the delay surely didnt help Hiroki Kuroda (4-5), who compared the stoppage to a rain delay. He allowed four runs and five hits in 4 2-3 innings. That included a perfect fourth after the delay before he lost his rhythm in the fifth — and so did his catcher. "The fact that I couldnt protect (the lead) was really frustrating," Kuroda said. Kazmir (8-2) allowed one unearned run and three hits in six innings for his third straight win. Dan Otero pitched two perfect innings before Sean Doolittle closed out the Yankees in the ninth. Kazmir stayed warm in the clubhouse during the delay and then threw a simulated inning in the bullpen, which wrapped up just as the lights came back on. "It worked out perfectly," Kazmir said. Brian McCann was switched from catcher to first base after the Yankees took Teiixeira out about 30 minutes before the game.dddddddddddd Murphy moved into the catchers spot. Sogard walked, advanced to second on Coco Crisps single and moved to third on Murphys first passed ball. Sogard scored on John Jasos groundout, and Crisp came home on Murphys second passed ball to put the As up 4-1. After being held out of Friday nights game to rest his sore right ankle, Sogard came through at the plate and in the field. Sogard lined a two-out, two-run single to centre to give the As a 2-0 lead in the second, and he cut down Kelly Johnson at home after fielding a grounder by Jeter in the fifth. New York scored its only run in the third when shortstop Andy Parrino sailed his throw to first on Derek Jeters grounder. Parrino got the run back when he hit an RBI double in the sixth. But the latest maintenance issue at Oaklands dual-purpose ballpark overshadowed the Kazmirs latest gem and anything else the As did on the field. The aging Coliseum, which is shared with the NFLs Oakland Raiders and is the only stadium in the country still home to teams from both leagues, has had multiple plumbing problems the past two years. The As have been trying for years to move to a new ballpark, including in San Jose, which the San Francisco Giants contend is part of their territory. The As are in the process of negotiating a new lease at the Coliseum, which opened in 1966, though its unclear what — if any — facility upgrades will be included in a potential deal. Only one forward contributed a goal in the 3-0 victory over Peru on Friday, with Daniel Sturridges deft strike in the first half breaking the dreary deadlock. But coach Roy Hodgson was still encouraged that his players managed to successfully exploit Perus inability to defend set pieces to extend their lead in the second half. From two corners in a five-minute span, Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka both netted in Englands first friendly since the 23-man World Cup squad was named. "It didnt look as if it would be too comfortable in the first half, but as soon as Daniel scored that wonderful goal the game wasnt in doubt," Hodgson said. "To do it in front of 85,000 people was a great send-off, the atmosphere was a vote of confidence. "When you play against teams with 10 men behind the ball you have to be patient but I had no doubt we would win." England heads over the weekend to Miami to play friendlies against Ecuador and Honduras before flying onto Brazil. In the Florida sun, it will be Wayne Rooney in particular with a lot to prove after the striker failed to come close to scoring in north London. "We think we know where he is, how his fitness is being maintained or progressing," Hodgson said. "His attitude and commitment are first-class, even in a game of this nature. He has two more weeks to keep that going." Although England was in control in the first half, there were anxious moments due to sloppiness that provided openings for the ineffective Peruvians, who didnt qualify for Brazil. When Rooney conceded possessioon early on, Jean Deza was able to unleash a dipping shot that Joe Hart saved, one of several openings for the winger on his debut.ddddddddddddAnd in the second half, defender Glen Johnson gave the ball away too easily inside his own half, allowing Andre Carrillo to break forward and release Deza to shoot. Peru goalkeeper Raul Fernandez at first had little to do, with the hosts taking until the 19th minute to come close to finding the target, with Sturridge dragging a shot wide. The match was so dreary that England fans made paper airplanes out of the cardboard used for a pre-match mosaic. But Sturridge produced a goal out of nowhere with Englands meaningful effort in the 32nd. A throw-in from Glen Johnson reached his Liverpool teammate, who placed the ball high into the net beyond Fernandez. That aside, throughout the first half Fernandez didnt have a save to make, while Hart was called into action just before the break, coming off his line to deny Luis Ramirez with his left boot. This wasnt the rousing send-off England fans had hoped for, with the creativity missing and anxious moments. But the pair of goals from defenders added gloss to the win. Cahill first met Jagielkas corner in the crowded penalty area, planting a header into the net in the 65th. Then Fernandez raced off the line to catch Leighton Baines corner but dropped the ball, which fell onto Cahills head and dropped for Jagielka to dispatch into the net. The victory was secure, but it will be far tougher on June 14 for the World Cup opener against Italy. "There wasnt the match sharpness as much as we would have liked," Sturridge said. "But it was great to be out there and we are happy with the result."

GENEVA -- UEFA President Michel Platini has ordered an investigation after a Champions League referee failed to follow guidelines and stop a match to warn Russian fans about racist abuse. UEFA said on Friday its protocol for match officials to handle racism incidents "was not applied" during the CSKA Moscow-Manchester City match on Wednesday. "This protocol empowers the referee to stop the match and ask for a public address system announcement to be made urging spectators to stop such racist conduct," UEFA said in a statement. Platinis request puts 33-year-old Romanian referee Ovidiu Hategan under scrutiny as well as the Russian club. UEFA has opened a disciplinary case against CSKA, prompted by complaints by City and midfielder Yaya Toure, who is black. Toure said he told Hategan during play about monkey noises being targeted at Citys black players by home fans. "UEFA must take their decision about that," City manager Manuel Pellegrini said on Friday of Platinis request. "We did all that we can do here, we cant do any more." Hategan, who has been a FIFA international list referee since 2008, did not stop play and ask stadium officials to broadcast a warning. It is the first step of UEFAs guidelines to deal with racist abuse in stadiums. If abuse continues, the second step in UEFAs protocol empowers referees to suspend a match and take teams off the pitch. The third is abandoning the match. UEFA said it will publish its investigation findings after the disciplinary case next Wednesday. Russian football authorities on Friday declined to condemn CSKA, the defending champion. The Russian Football Union said "CSKA fans have always been known for their loyalty to the club and proper behaviour at arenas," in a statement which expressed support for FIFA and UEFA efforts to tackle racism. Russian league chief executive Sergey Cheban, who attended the match at Khimki Arena, told The Associated Press "there was not an incident." "Maybe a misunderstanding. The stadium is relatively small. The acoustics are very special in there as well. So maybe just a misunderstanding," Cheban said through an interpreter at a meeting of European leagues in Paris. The incident has directed attention at Russian footballs issues with racism ahead of the country hosting the 2018 World Cup. The 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine raised the profile of UEFAs guidelines for referees, who have had authority since 2009 to halt matches and deal with racist abuse. UEFA insisted ahead of Euro 2012 there was a clear protocol in place after Italy forward Mario Balotelli, who is black, suggested he would walk off the pitch if targeted for abuse. CSKA has questioned whether any racially motivated abuse was used, even as it issued a statement on Thursday regretting the incident. "Having carefully studied the video of the game, we found no racist insults from CSKA supporters to the guests," the club said. CSKA has increasing influence in European football through its director Evgeni Giner. Giner sits on the Platini-chaired UEFA strategy council, as one of four delegates repre

Our Sky Sports Fantasy Football guru picks out a starting XI of young stars with the potential to shine in the Premier League this season. The likes of Dele Alli, Marcus Rashford and Ross Barkley emerged to post impressive points tallies last season, but who can follow in their footsteps and star in the 2016/17 campaign? Pick your team Which young stars are you backing to shine? Select your Sky Sports Fantasy Football team here. Matt Brocklebank highlights a starting XI of intriguing prospects for your Sky Sports Fantasy Football team... Eleven young players tipped to shine this season GOALKEEPERSJordan Pickford (£4.8m), SunderlandJack Butland was last seasons emerging star for Stoke as just one of seven goalkeepers to rack up triple figures in Sky Sports Fantasy Football having made the third most saves in the Premier League, but who will be the next breakthrough stopper? Liverpools 23-year-old summer signing Loris Karius catches the interest given Simon Mignolets fragility but is already priced up as a real contender for a starting berth at £6.6m. Jordan Pickford is committed to breaking through at Sunderland Sunderlands 22-year-old highly-rated Pickford is the prospect that really interests from a Fantasy perspective at a meagre £4.8m. His stats from last season are impressive to say the least, keeping 13 clean sheets from 24 appearances while on loan at Preston, with a percentage of 54.2 being the highest of any keeper to have played 10 times or more in Englands top four tiers.DEFENDERSTimothy Fosu-Mensah (£6.5) - Manchester UnitedThere has to be a chance that some of the United young guns blooded by Louis van Gaal last season will be forced to take more of a back seat under the new manager, but Fonsu-Mensah looks well placed to mount a serious bid for a place in the side. His versatility is a real asset as hes quite comfortable in a defensive midfield role as well as playing across the back four, with centre-back the place he probably wants to be. Timothy Fosu-Mensah holds off Dimitri Payet at Upton Park last season The 18-year-old possesses incredible pace and his performances towards the end of last season, although fairly limited, saw him called up to the Netherlands squad, which bodes well for the future. He might be a slow burner for Fantasy Football managers and may be worth monitoring until Uniteds plans become a little clearer, but those taking the plunge with the Dutchman from the start could be in an extremely strong position if Mourinho decides to put faith in him.Eric Bailly (£9.2m) - Manchester UnitedBailly has to carry the tag of being Jose Mourinhos first signing as Manchester United manager but many people at the club feel hes well up to the burden of such responsibility. Having reportedly cost somewhere in the region of £30m from Villarreal, Fantasy Football managers shouldnt be too put off by his £9.2m price and, having been spotted wearing the No 6 shirt in an early training session a few weeks back, theres a decent chance he could be right at the core of Mourinhos thinking. Eric Bailly in pre-season action against Wigan Mourinhos defensive-mindedness might not be to the liking of every United fan out there, but it should yield a bagful of clean sheets and Fantasy managers must consider Bailly closely given he weighs in £0.8m cheaper than likely centre-back partner Chris Smalling.Ben Gibson (£6.3m) - MiddlesbroughGibson is another who only just sneaks into the category as a pretty well-established 23-year-old, but hes probably not so well-known by many Premier League viewers and looks worthy of inclusion following an excellent contribution in Middlesbroughs promotion campaign from the Sky Bet Championship. Ben Gibson heads home his only goal of last season You get the impression Gibson cant have had it easy very early in his career, being the nephew of Boro chairman Steve Gibson, but hes matured pretty swiftly and helped his side concede just 31 goals last term, the best defensive record in the top four tiers of the English pyramid. With England assessing his progress and a number of other clubs reportedly interested, Gibson should be on the radar of every Fantasy Football manager.Joe Gomez (£6.4m) - LiverpoolGomez is another talented youngster who ended last season on the sidelines. He has suffered another injury setback but looks set to be available soon after the start of the season. Former Charlton full-back Gomez was part of the England U17 team that won the European Championship in Malta two years ago and it was in international colours - with the U18s - that he picked up his season-ending injury just seven matches into his Anfield career . He had made a really good impression until that point, including the odd appearance at centre-back, and although he claims a ruptured anterior knee ligament meant he had to learn how to walk again, his rehab has reportedly gone very well. Joe Gomez impressed before being struck by injury With major doubts around the Liverpool left-back position following the Europa League final, manager Jurgen Klopp could give Gomez his chance to shine there, or he may even be capable of pushing Nathaniel Clyne close for a starting spot on the opposite flank.MIDFIELDERSKenedy (£7.3m) - ChelseaThe name Kenedy might be a fairly familiar one now with Premier League viewers but its worth pointing out Chelseas Brazilian star is still just 20 years of age and he could have a big say in the upcoming campaign if afforded some game-time by new manager Antonio Conte. Kenedys versatility will be a big draw for the pragmatic Conte, who could be tempted to use him on the left side of midfield as his defensive capabilities are unquestionable following several outings as full-back under Guus Hiddink. Kenedy is versatile and scored twice in five starts last term The youngster was only handed five starts in all competitions last season but still managed to score twice, including a superb first-minute strike against Norwich. Take on your mates Prove youre the best football manager by creating a league and inviting your mates here. Joshua Onomah (£7.5m) - TottenhamCompetition for places in the Tottenham line-up already looks to have increased in relation to last season, but every young player in the Spurs set-up is safe in the knowledge that theyll be handed opportunities somewhere along the line by manager Mauricio Pochettino. Moreover, they know that if they impress, theyll be trusted. Josh Onomah made eight substitute appearances last season Onomah has only made seven fleeting appearances but the local Enfield lad showed glimmers of promise when brought off the bench, without quite managing to get on the scoresheet. Theres room for improvement in his all-round game and the arrival of Eredivisie top scorer Vincent Janssen means hell have to push for an attacking midfield place, or out wide, rather than up front, but Onomah could be worth chancing given Spurs proven policy of eliciting progress from their under-21s.Jonathan Leko (£6.6m) - West BromDarren Fletcher was West Broms highest-scoring Fantasy Football contributor with 108 points last season and there must be a decent chance Leko can surpass that tally this time around. Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo but capped at U16 and U17 level for England, the speedy winger impressed in just a handful of appearances towards the end of last season for the Baggies. Jonathan Leko impressed in the closing stages of last season The 17-year-old has been at the club since he was 11 and has been brought along steadily, but next term could see him take a big leap forward in his development. Tony Pulis was full of praise for the teen earlier this year and will be keen to inject a touch of attacking flair into his typically robust side. Duncan Watmore (£8.1m) - SunderlandNot many Premier League stars have a first-class degree in economics and business management but Watmore, who was given time off training to collect his honours last year, looks a special sort of talent on and off the pitch. Unsurprisingly given his massive workload while trying to juggle student life with Premier League survival at Sunderland, its Watmores industry and work ethic that make him stand out, although he also possesses an attacking instinct which could see him reward Fantasy managers handsomely. Duncan Watmore looks a first-class talent - and has a first-class degree He only scored 58 points in 2015/16, one point fewer than team-mate Lee Cattermole, but he was just about the only player in the Black Cats ranks who gave the home fans real hope during some of the grimmest months and its no surprise to see his asking price has risen from £3.8m to £8.1m, although much of that rise is due to enhanced transfer budget. He started six times last season but still managed three goals and looks a really smart prospect, in more ways than one.STRIKERSMichy Batshuayi (£11.5m) - ChelseaBelgiums embarrassment of riches in the centre-forward position - namely Romelu Lukaku, Christian Benteke and Divock Origi - meant Batshuayis game time was limited at Euro 2016, but he did grab a goal from the substitutes bench against Hungary. The 22-year-old scored 17 times in Ligue 1 last season and has become the most expensive sale in Marseilles history. Following in the footprints of Didier Drogba, he leaves the Stade Velodrome for Stamford Bridge and after scoring 33 goals in 78 appearances in total for the French club, Chelsea fans will be dreaming of the youngster eventually making a similar impact to club legend Drogba. Michy Batshuayi could make a major impact this season Theres an argument to suggest this season may come too soon for Batshuayi, especially with Diego Costa still very much considered the main man in the Blues forward ranks, but he is without doubt one of the brightest prospects to have joined the Premier League this summer and cannot be left out of calculations, despite his lofty price tag.Lys Mousset (£ 7.1m) - BournemouthI had a fair amount of offers, from Torino, CSKA Moscow, Tottenham and Sevilla but I felt Bournemouth [was the right club], Mousset said after sealing his move to the Vitality Stadium. Another rising French star, the Montivilliers-born forward has impressed in a short space of time for his big local club Le Harve in Ligue 2, scoring 14 goals in 34 appearances. Lys Mousset in action for France at the Toulon tournament Whether he snubbed Spurs or not, he will be given every chance to prove himself under the shrewd tutelage of Eddie Howe at Bournemouth and considering the progress of Callum Wilson and Josh King, Mousset could be the next major improver for the Cherries. A long-awaited day had finally arrived: the Brewers slugger is officially back with his team for the first time since being suspended for 65 games for violating Major League Baseballs anti-drug agreement as part of the Biogenesis doping scandal. Once again, hes sorry. And hes ready to move on. "I took responsibility for that mistake I made," Braun said Thursday. "For me, my focus again is on this year and moving forward and learning a new position and getting ready for the season." One that includes a move from left to right field, and questions about whether Braun is over the right thumb injury that also limited him in 2013. But it was that other topic that again dominated a respectful question-and-answer session on a sunny day outside the Brewers spring training complex. And the 2011 NL MVP offered familiar answers. "Like I said, Ive addressed it multiple times. I appreciate your interest. I appreciate everybodys interest," Braun said to one of several questions about why he used a banned substance. "I understand you have a job to do, but Ive already addressed that multiple times at multiple press conferences." There was a statement in August. A gathering with reporters in Milwaukee during a Thanksgiving food drive. Another press conference at fan outreach event last month, his first major public appearance in Milwaukee since the suspension. Its easy to see why theres still interest. After the Yankees Alex Rodriguez, Braun is perhaps the most well-known player suspended for using performance-enhancing drugs. He remains relatively popular in Milwaukee despite the suspension, judging by fans still wearing his No. 8 jersey at the teams winter outreach event. One such fan watched intently from about 50 feet away behind a steel fence at the Maryvale baseball complex, holding on to a yellow Braun jersey. Nearly two years ago to the day, Braun offered a vociferous proclamation of innocence at spring training. At the time, a 50-game suspension for a positive drug test had been overturned by an arbitrator. "We won," he said then with conviction, "because the truth is on my side." Turned out not to be the case. "Certainly I wish that I hadnt ddone the press conference.dddddddddddd I wish that I had known then what I know now," Braun said Thursday. "If I had, certainly I wouldnt have done it at all." The front office and manager Ron Roenicke appear to be more than satisfied with how hes made amends with teammates. "Yeah, he doesnt need to address anything anymore. If he wants to, fine," Roenicke said. "He feels like hes said enough. Hes said enough certainly for me." Now if he can just get back to that MVP form under a glare of suspicion that will almost certainly still follow him in the short term, especially on the road. Braun hit .298 with nine home runs, 38 RBIs and four steals in 61 games in 2013, well below his career averages. He is usually good for at least 30-plus homers, 110 RBIs and 20 steals, along with a .320 average. "I feel good, but like I said its always a challenge getting use to facing pitching again and seeing curveballs and sliders and some spin on the ball," Braun said about his thumb. "Theres always an adjustment phase but I feel pretty good." Then theres the new position. As part of the acclimation process, Braun brought up the possibility of being an "all-time" defender in a minor-league game this spring, meaning he would be a fielder for both sides. Roenicke said he first thought about shifting Braun in 2011. "It wont be that easy of a transition, even though hes a very good left fielder," Roenicke said. "Its different when that ball turns the other way." Braun also declined comment when asked about his relationship with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The former business partners are two of Wisconsins biggest stars, and Rodgers expressed disappointment after Brauns suspension last summer. To others in baseball, the return of Braun and accompanying drama might be viewed as a headache. Braun is certainly aware that he might get negative reactions a ' ' '

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Left-hander Martin Perez has agreed to a $12.5 million, four-year contract with the Texas Rangers that could be worth $32.55 million over seven seasons and puts four of their starting pitchers under contract through at least 2017. The 22-year-old Perez got a deal Thursday that includes three club options through 2020. Perez was 10-6 in 20 starts this season, matching Oaklands Dan Straily for the most wins by an American League rookie. After starting the season on the disabled list because he broke his left forearm in a spring training game, Perez was recalled on June 22 and got all of his wins. He was the first Texas rookie to win six consecutive starts and went nearly two months between losses. "Part of our long-term plan is to identify the best talent and best makeup guys, best workers that we have in the organization, and try to make sure to keep that core together as long as possible," general manager Jon Daniels said. "This is a really mutually beneficial deal in our minds. Martin gets security and a lot of money for a young man his age early in his career, and we get cost control and hopefully the comfort knowing that weve got a young quality, high-side left-hander in our rotation for years to come." Perez originally signed with the Rangers as a 16-year-old undrafted free agent from Venezuela. Perez got a $1 million signing bonus. His 2014 salary will be $750,000, then increase to $1 million, $2.9 million and $4.4 million over the successive seasons. The Rangers have a $6 million option for 2018 with a $2.45 million buyout. If Texas exercises that it gets a $7.5 million option for 2019 with a $750,000 buyout. And if thats exercised, the Rangers get a $9 million option for 2020 with a $250,000 buyout. "I can focus and play baseball and learn something new every day to be a better pitcher, and a better person. Thats what I want," Perez said. "My future is here." Daniels said the Rangers have seen continued growth in Perez as a pitcher and person. The young pitcher also impressed Daniels during discussions about the new deal, when Perez unprompted said the money wouldnt change him and that hed work even harder. He also talked about long-term goals. "From a management standpoint, thats all you can ask," Daniels said. Rangers ace Yu Darvish, along with left-handers Matt Harrison and Derek Holland are also signed through at least 2017. Like Perez, Harrison and Holland have options for additional years. Alexi Ogando, another starter, is eligible for salary arbitration this winter but is still under club control for three more seasons. Daniels expects a conversation with Ogando about a one-year deal. "To have four guys of that calibre and plus with Alexi, to have that talent in that rotation, thats an unusual position to be in for any franchise, especially us," Daniels said. "Its a good feeling. ... Things happen, there are no guarantees. But Ill take my chances to have that kind of ability and makeup and youth thats already had success pitching at the big league level." ------ AP Sports Writer Ronald Blum contributed to this report. WASHINGTON, DC—After more than 30 years spent hiding in the Los Angeles underground as wanted criminals, the members of the crack commando unit Alpha Team, commonly known as the A-Team, were cleared of all charges brought against them by the U.S. military, an army official announced Monday. Above: The A-Team circa 1984. In 1972, we arrested the members of the A-Team for a crime they swore they didnt commit, Gen. Stephen Lupo said. They broke out of our maximum-security stockade, and from that moment forth, I thought of nothing but their recapture. However, a recent audit of their file has revealed that the arrest of the Alpha Force members was made in error. The U.S. military deeply regrets the mistake. According to Lupo, the A-Team members exoneration will occur before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces on Aug. 24. Just hours after Lupos announcement was made, Cpt. H.M. Howlin Mad Murdock, the A-Teams pilot, resurfaced to speak with journalist Amy Allen, who often reported on the mercenaries charitable acts. For decades, weve been forced to live in the shadows, Murdock said. Somehow, we always found a way to help people who had nowhere else to turn, but we operated under the constant threat of recapture. Finally, the nightmare is over. Added Murdock: Owooohh, Im a little doggie! Ow ow owooohhhh! Murdock and the surviving members of the team—the classically handsome Lt. Templeton Arthur Face Peck and the Mohawk-sporting mechanic, Sgt. Bosco B.A. Baracus—said their joy over the announcement was tempered only by regret that their de-facto leader, Col. John Hannibal Smith, was not alive tto see their names cleared.dddddddddddd. Somewhere up there, Hannibal is smiling down on us—maybe disguised as a giant crocodile or a wealthy diamond merchant, Peck said. He loved it when a plan come together. More than any of us, he would have enjoyed seeing the look on [Col. Roderick] Deckers face when our innocence was announced, Peck continued. Decker hated Hannibal ever since they served together back in Nam. Decker never could stand his cocky attitude. Smith was gunned down in front of a Las Vegas casino in 1994. The A-Team members said that, although they presume the armys offer of freedom is legitimate, they have taken precautions. We formed a backup plan in case things turn out to be on the jazz, Peck said, using the teams code phrase for a troublesome situation. Murdocks gonna perch a helicopter on top of the courtroom. B.A. found a broken Howitzer in a junkyard, got it working again, and got it mounted in our van. We also have a whole team of troubled teens B.A. befriended and taught valuable lessons. They placed explosives throughout the courtroom and along our subterranean escape route. If need be, theyll blow that courtroom apart. Peck admitted that their escape plan might be too crazy to work, acknowledging the possibility that he will be punched in the face during the escape. He also noted that stacks of cardboard boxes might break the falls of the military personnel thrown into the air by the A-Teams explosives. Just to be safe, Iseys[/url] ' ' '

ASPEN, Colo. -- Reginas Mark McMorris is taking home a silver medal and a fractured rib from Saturdays slopestyle event at the Winter X Games. McMorris caught his snowboard on the lip of a rail and went sliding down the bar before landing hard on the snow on his third and final run of the day. He stayed on the ground for a few minutes before riding down the hill under his own power. "I whacked my side and I lost my breath," said McMorris, who was treated and released from the hospital, where X-rays showed he had a fractured rib but no other damage. "I lost my focus. Its too bad because I really wanted to do stuff here." McMorris, the gold-medal favourite heading into Sochi next month, said in a statement that despite the injury, he still has his sights set on Russia, where slopestyle will make its Olympic debut. "After thorough discussions with my team of doctors and a number of medical specialists, and my physical therapist and coaches, I will continue as planned with traveling to Europe (Sunday) and recovering for the Olympics," he said. "While Im sore, Im continuing on my road to Sochi." Maxence Parrot of Bromont, Que., reached the top of the podium for the second time in as many days at the X Games, edging McMorris for gold with 96.33 points. Parrot, who captured his first X Games gold medal Friday night in the big air competition, completed back-to-back triple corks for the first time in a slopestyle competition on his first run. "I tried the back-to-back triple corks at practice this morning but it wasnt working," Parrot said. "But I guess with the crowd and the great atmosphere here I was able to pull it off. "All the riders are doing great jumps now. I think its the riders who really step it up on the rails who are going to have success." McMorris finished with 95.66 points on the strength of his second run. Stale Sandbech of Norway placed third with 90.00. The best score of the three runs is the final score. Sebastien Toutant of LAssomption, Que., who will also represent Canada in Russia, placed seventh. In the womens slopestyle final, Sochi-bound Spencer OBrien of Courtenay, B.C., finished third with 94.00 points. DETROIT -- After another early exit by Miguel Cabrera, the Detroit Tigers arent exactly sure when their star will return to the lineup. The reigning Triple Crown winner was pulled from a second straight game, this time after two innings Friday night because of irritation in his abdominal area. "I dont feel very good," Cabrera said after a 7-2 win over Cleveland. "I dont want to be specific. I dont feel 100 per cent." Victor Martinez doubled twice and drove in two runs as the AL Central-leading Tigers won in a game stopped after seven innings because of rain. Detroit opened a 7 1/2-game lead over the second-place Indians. Cabrera said he didnt swing the bat well in batting practice, then Tigers manager Jim Leyland watched the third baseman struggle while striking out in his only at-bat. Cabrera likely wont go on the disabled list -- hes never been on the DL in his 11-season career -- because rosters can expand on Sunday. But the Tigers are wondering just how long they might have to sit Cabrera until the lingering strained left abdominal wall gets much better. "I dont have any idea on the status," Leyland said. "All I can tell you is when you pull a guy out one night, normally he doesnt start the next day. I dont have any idea. I dont really know. I just have to play it by ear, see what happens." Cabrera left Thursdays game after hurting his abdomen while making an awkward slide. He has been bothered by a strained left abdominal wall for over a month and hampered by knee and shin injuries since then. The slugger leads the majors with 130 RBIs and a .358 batting average. He also has 43 home runs. Indians manager Terry Francona held a short meeting with his team before the game. Cleveland then lost to Detroit for the 17th time in their last 21 meetings. "Were all aware of what our record is," Francona said. "We dont go into any game not thinking were going to win. The reason theyre beating us is theyre good." Andy Dirks entered after Cabrera left and got two hits and scored twice. Rick Porcello (11-7) allowed two runs and five hits in 5 2-3 innings, walking two and striking out three. He was replaced by Al Alburquerque with the bases loaded and two out in the sixth. Alburquerque walked Asdrubal Cabrera to force in a run and make it 5-2, but then got Yan Gomes on a grounder. Drew Smyly and Bruce Rondon combined to pitch a scoreless seventh as each allowed a hit. Zach McAllister (7-8) gave up five runs and six hits in 3 2-3 innings. Cleveland took a 1-0 lead in the first on a spectacular double play started by Detroit shortstop Jose Iglesias. With runners on first and third and none out, Asdrubal Cabrera hit a one-hop liner that Iglesias snared with a dive to his right. He then made the throw to second baseman Omar Infante while still on the ground and rolling over. "The kid made one of the best plays Ive ever seen. Weve got runners on first and third and none out, then that," Francona said. "We got a run out of it. But we would have had still had two on and none out ... that hurt." The Tigers tied it in the second on Don Kellys sacrifice fly. Detroit scored four in the third to take a 5-1 lead. Austin Jackson singled in a run and Martinez hit a bases-loaded, two-run double that eluded centre fielder Michael Bourn, who lost the ball in the twilight. "I saw it off the bat, I knew it was coming to me. From there, I didnt see it," Bourn said. "Obviously, I was pretty far away from it. ... That was on me, I take the blame."
